HDUpdate question/issue

I can add Sessions to an existing image, but if the pc looses connection to the update server on the next boot, the pc boots with the compressed image of the files that were there from the original initrd /vmlinuz files. And, the new Sessions on the client pc are now missing.

How do I make HDUPDATE grab a conf file (say, thinstation.conf.Group-IT getting a new Firefox shortcut) and permanently write it into the existing vmlinuz/initrd files on the pc.  I don't want users complaining that they can't do their job because they don't see an icon because the deployment server is down when they bootup.
