View client with VNC

Kanwar Ranbir Sandhu
Hello,

Is it possible to view a thin client desktop with a "normal" VNC client
instead of with a browser and the java VNC client?

I can see that VNC is running on the thin client on ports 5800 and 5900,
but I can only view the desktop by hitting the thin client's IP at port
5800 from my browser.  What I would like to do is something like this,
from the console:

vncviewer 192.168.0.215:5900

But, not much happens.  That is, it looks like the VNC client is
starting because a connection is made, but a VNC windows doesn't open,
and so I can't see anything.

Am I missing an option for vncviewer?  Something else?

Regards,

Ranbir

Wrong port. Try this: vncviewer 192.168.0.215:0

Thanks for the reply.

Port 0?  In any case, it doesn't work.  The vnc client just attempted to
connect to port 5900 again, and the same thing happens: nothing.  Well,
not quite nothing, but there is no change.  Here's what is printed to
stdout:

[ksandhu@krs ~]$ vncviewer 192.168.0.215:0

VNC Viewer Free Edition 4.1.1 for X - built Aug  4 2005 06:43:41
Copyright (C) 2002-2005 RealVNC Ltd.
See http://www.realvnc.com for information on VNC.

Mon Sep 26 15:47:04 2005
CConn:       connected to host 192.168.0.215 port 5900
CConnection: Server supports RFB protocol version 3.130
CConnection: Using RFB protocol version 3.8

After that, nothing happens.  I should be getting prompted to enter a
password, but the password dialog box doesn't appear.

It must be something else.  Any other ideas?

Ranbir

I ran tcpdump after trying your suggestion failed to work for me.  I
don't use tcpdump very often, so I'm not sure I'm interpreting this
correctly, but it doesn't look good:

16:00:19.129158 IP (tos 0x0, ttl  64, id 57194, offset 0, flags [DF],
proto 6, length: 64) krs.60271 > 192.168.0.215.5900: P [bad tcp cksum
82bf (->7093)!] 0:12(12) ack 13 win 1460 <nop,nop,timestamp 321 09444
108891>

Looks like vnc on the thin client side isn't replying correctly.

Options?

Funny. I think you are right. Something is fishy. I just tested with my TS
2.1.3 installation and VNC doesn't work as it used to earlier. I'm certain
that port/display zero is correct. That isn't the problem. Works great
with 2.1.0.

I've CC'ed Miles. Maybe he'll have a comment tomorrow.

Try ip:100

I think VNC works with an offset from its standard 5800

need some more info on this as don't have the full thread below.

is vnc embdeded server not working?  someone else mentioned this but when I tested it seemed ok.

or are you talking about vncclient?  I haven't tested it for ages so could have problems.

Exactly. When you try the stand-alone vncviewer from e.g. a Windows box,
connection is refused. You can even replicate the problem from within TS
with TS's vncviewer: localhost:0

This gives a minor error to which you just click ok, and then it continues
OK. From from an external box however, you can't get connected.

Exactly as Mike said: trying to connect to the vnc embedded server with
a VNC client, such as the one from RealVNC, doesn't work.  I can only
connect with the built in tight vnc java client.

When I try:

[ksandhu@krs ~]$ vncviewer 192.168.0.215:0

All I get is this:

VNC Viewer Free Edition 4.1.1 for X - built Aug  4 2005 06:43:41
Copyright (C) 2002-2005 RealVNC Ltd.
See http://www.realvnc.com for information on VNC.

Tue Sep 27 15:47:30 2005
CConn:       connected to host 192.168.0.215 port 5900
CConnection: Server supports RFB protocol version 3.130
CConnection: Using RFB protocol version 3.8

A password dialog box should appear, but it doesn't.

I ran tcpdump, and saw this:

16:00:19.129158 IP (tos 0x0, ttl  64, id 57194, offset 0, flags [DF],
proto 6, length: 64) krs.60271 > 192.168.0.215.5900: P [bad tcp cksum
82bf (->7093)!] 0:12(12) ack 13 win 1460 <nop,nop,timestamp 321 09444
108891>

So, it would seem that in 2.1.3, controlling/viewing a thin client
desktop with a VNC client (i.e. not with the web browser) doesn't work.
I've seen this issue in previous Thinstation releases as well, though I
now can't remember how far back.

Any ideas?

Regards.

could it be the realvnc version you are using?  what about trying an older version of the viewer?

Andrew-157
Ooh, sorry, it's tightvnc's vncviewer :*)

The version I just downloaded from the RealVNC website doesn't work, it flashes up connecting and then quits out..

In reply to this post by Kanwar Ranbir Sandhu
there is actually a newer version of the xfvnc program, haven't included it yet as its still in
beta, although we probably could throw it in ts 2.2 and see what happens.

let me know if it works with an older version of vnc anyhow and we'll work out where to go from there.

yes, but this is a new version isn't it? try an old one.  I think you'll find tightvnc 1.2.9 works
ok, please test and let me know.
