Wireless Problem - Dell Vostro 1523 Laptop

Motech09
Hello all,

I will post my config information tomorrow at work if needed.  I've been trying to get a Vostro 1523 laptop wireless to work with Thinstation and haven't succeeded yet.  I threw the kitchen sink at it (all modules) and fails --- wireless interface doesn't even activate the interface.  Ifconfig/iwconfig shows nothing as well.  It uses a Broadcom BCM43228 nic so I'm wondering do I need to go out and download the driver(s) from the broadcom website and add it as a module?

Maybe upgrade the kernel?

Also, if I need to add my own drivers, then, in what folder do I add them? Or where are the modules kept?

Its been several months since my last battle with Thinstation (Dell Wyse thin clients) so I've gotten rusty.

Thanks in advance,

Motech09

Probably a firmware issue.  b43 doesn't advertise the firmware it uses so allfirmware doesn't work.  Check /var/log/messages to see what firmware it needs.  You can also try the broadcom-sta package.

Thanks Michael.

I ended up digging through the message log and discovered this:

b43-phy0: Broadcom 4312 WLAN found (core revision 15)

I noticed that it was looking for two drivers, lp0initvals15.fw and ucode15.fw which neither were in the correct locations or the folder did not exist so I corrected and added the broadcom-sta package.  One of the changes worked --- not sure which but that's fine.
